Duplo Dynamos: Classes for Ages 4-5


Classes for pre-school and young elementary students to take with a parent or guardian

Want to be a Duplo Dynamo? Complete our classes using fun, simple machines -- and earn your Duplo Mastery Certificate! Classes for the 4-5 year old age group are designed for a student/parent pair to take together. Come enjoy an hour with your child, learning together!


Duplo Dynamos - Car launcher
In this class we will investigate force and friction. We will build a cool launcher to push a car up a hill! This class is for kids 4-5 years old and a trusted adult.

Duplo Dynamos - Goal!
In this class we'll learn about using hinges to create movement by using a fixed axle in our goalie machine.

Duplo Dynamos - Going Fishing
In this class we will learn about different ways of building structures by building a lightweight but strong fishing rod.

Duplo Dynamos - Ice Hockey Player
In this class, we design and build a hockey player to study forces, energy, and motion. This class is for kids 4-5 years old and a trusted adult.

Duplo Dynamos - Measuring car
In this class, we will use gears to build a car that measures how far it travels! This class is for kids 4-5 years old and a trusted adult.

Elementary Engineers: Classes for Ages 6-8


Classes for elementary students to learn about simple, motorized machines.

Take a step up from simple machines to motorized mechanisms. Earn your SDRA Elementary Engineering degree by completing our Elementary Engineers classes, using hands-on activities to learn key concepts through building and testing, just like real engineers!


Elementary Engineers - Dogbot
In this class, we will learn about powered machines. We will investigate levers and cranks to make a LEGO® dog!

Elementary Engineers - Dragster
In this class, we learn about powered machines. We investigate gearing up for speed.

Elementary Engineers - Fishing Rod
In this class, we learn about forces and motion. We will investigate the ratchet and pawl as a safety system.

Elementary Engineers - Flywheeler
In this class we will learn about energy. We investigate using the flywheel to store energy.

In this class, we will learn about forces and motion. We will investigate wheel sizes and tire material for vehicle efficiency.

In this class, we learn about energy. We investigate capturing wind energy for transport.

In this class, we learn about measurements. We will investigate gearing down and complex gearing.

In this class, we learn about energy. We investigate sails for capturing wind energy.

Elementary Engineers Camp I
Build and test more complex machines in our two-day camp! This camps focuses on the science behind the machine, and participants will explore motorizing their creations. Open to 6-8 year olds.

NXT Robotics: Classes for Ages 9-14


Build and program autonomous robots -- with Lego bricks!

Welcome to the Robotics University! Our NXT classes provide a variety of experiences for all students. Take the occasional class to build your skills, or pursue your official SDRA Robotics degree by completing all of our levels -- beginner, intermediate, and advanced! Levels build on one another, so look at the prerequisites!


FLL Team Mentoring - Project
Teams! Do you need assistance preparing for this year's championship event? SDRA is providing FREE team mentoring sessions. In this class, we focus on the Project. What makes a good FLL project? Find out with tips and tricks on good presentations, as well as one-on-one mentoring and feedback on YOUR project! Our mentors will help teams in all stages - we can help you decide WHAT to do, or POLISH what you already have! This class is intended to be a team experience, so at least several members of your team need to attend together. Coaches call to sign up

Teams! Do you need assistance preparing for this year's championship event? SDRA is providing FREE team mentoring sessions. In this class, we focus on the Robot. How do you make your robot score the best it can? We will explore strategies and more advanced programming concepts, as well as one-on-one mentoring and feedback for your team on YOUR robot. Our mentors will help teams in all stages - we can provide insight on design, programming, and debugging. This class is intended to be a team experience, so at least several members of your team need to attend together. Coaches call to sign up

FLL Team Mentoring - Teamwork

Teams! Do you need assistance preparing for this year's championship event? SDRA is providing FREE team mentoring sessions. In this class, we focus on the Technical Briefing. How do you communicate to the judges about your robot? We will look at the rubrics as well as practice sample questions and answers to help you perform at your best on Championship Day. Our mentors will help teams on a one-on-one basis, and provide provide unique feedback! This class is intended to be a team experience, so at least several members of your team need to attend together. Coaches call to sign up

130: NXT Robotics - Building 130 Beginning Wheel Systems
Expand your building knowledge! We investigate competing wheel systems for speed, accuracy, and power. Prerequisite: Building 101 or prior SDRA robotics class.

135: Building 135 - Treads
Treads are a unique type of wheel system. Expand your knowledge of wheel systems with this class on treads, including design and applications.

210: NXT Robotics - Building 210
Strengthen your robot by looking at the fundamental structures behind the building design. In this class we will explore rigid and flexible structures and how they affect your robot's performance. Open to 9-14 year olds. Prerequisite - Building 101 or prior SDRA robotics class.

235: Building 235 - Power Gears
Gearing has multiple uses. Gearing down gives more power. Explore how to give your robot more torque by gearing it down.

236: Building 236 - Speed gears
Gearing has multiple uses. By gearing your robot up, you can increase speed. Explore how and when to gear up.

Take your LEGO® programming skills to the next level through looping. Discover how to accomplish repeated actions with streamlined programming. Prerequisite: Programming 101.

151: NXT Robotics - Programming 151 Switches
Take your LEGO® programming skills to the next level using switches! Let your robot decide what actions to take based on input from the world around it. Prerequisites: Programming 101 and one of Programming 110, 120, or 130.

201: NXT Robotics - Programming 201
Step up into the robotics intermediate programming level! This class is an intermediate programming refresher, and we recap skills learned in prior programming classes. You can get back in the programming groove so you are ready to write those killer robot programs in the intermediate and advanced programming classes. Open to 9-14 year olds. Learn basic robot engineering and programming skills; develop teamwork and presentation expertise. Open to 9-14-year-olds who have not previously participated in FIRST Lego League.

201: FIRST Lego League - Intermediate and Beyond! Camp
Want even more FLL? Build your skills in robot performance, teamwork, and presentation during this five day camp. Open to 9-14 year-old students with prior FLL experience or who have taken the SDRA Beginner FLL Camp. STUDENTS CAN TAKE MULTIPLE SESSIONS! TOPICS AND MISSIONS VARY

201: FIRST Lego League All-Girls Beginner and Intermediate Camps
Calling all girls! SDRA and NASA are sponsoring this FREE Girls-Only Robotics Camp! We've reserved both a beginner and intermediate FIRST Lego League and Robotics camp as a FREE opportunity for girls ages 9-14. Girls can register for one or both of the week-long camps. Our exciting camps promote STEM learning, leadership and teamwork skills, and fun! Our Girls Only camps provide an empowering environment where girls can explore science and robotics. So come, transport yourself into the amazing world of FIRST Lego League!
  • July 8 - 13 is the Beginner Camp, and is open to girls aged 9-14 who have not previously participated in FLL.
  • July 15 - July 19 is the Intermediate Camp, and is open to girls 9-14 years old who participated in FLL in the past or took one of the SDRA Beginner FLL camps.TOPICS ARE DIFFERENT EVERY YEAR!

Robotics for Adults: Classes for Ages 18-99


Adult engineering, design, and programming classes using Lego robotics

Want to know more about Lego robotics, FIRST Lego League (FLL), or engineering concepts? Have we got the classes for you! These classes are for adults wishing to learn more about the buzz surrounding FLL, how robotics can be used for STEM instruction in the classroom, or just have some fun! College credit is available for some of the classes and workshops.


Beginning Lego Robotics Programming for Adults
This class gets adult FLL coaches, team mentors, teachers, and anybody interested in learning how to program a Lego robot up to speed. We cover the basics on how to make the robot do what you want it to do, and give you a challenge to complete. Come see what all the fun is about!

Beginning Lego Robotics Workshop for Adults
Learn the basics of robot design, building, and programming using the Lego Mindstorms programming environment! This workshop is perfect for parents, First Lego League coaches, K-12 teachers, and anybody who has an interest in learning more about engineering, technology, and programming! Class meets 5-9:30pm on Friday, and 9am-6pm on Saturday. Get Augustana College credit for a total of $120 at the Augustana College website at http://www.augie.edu/academics/continuing-education-and-workshops/workshops. Register for the class here to take it for no credit.

FLL All-Coach Meeting - Pick one
This short meeting will cover important FLL season information, our new open practice structure, basic logistical information for the season, and new judging rubrics being implemented this year. All coaches, new and veterans, need to attend one of the sessions.
